Skogen Named NDUS Interim Chancellor
Bismarck, N.D. -- The North Dakota State Board of Higher Education today appointed Larry C. Skogen, Ph.D., president of Bismarck State College, as the interim chancellor of the North Dakota University System. Dr. Skogen has been serving as acting chancellor since June 24, 2013. His appointment, effective November 1, 2013, will run through June 2015.
"Dr. Skogen has done an excellent job as acting chancellor the past three months, and his appointment today reaffirms the confidence the board has in the leadership and vision he has been providing," said Board President Kirsten Diederich. "As a former North Dakota college president, he is uniquely positioned to be the interim chancellor. The North Dakota University System is among the best in the nation, and Dr. Skogen and the Board are looking forward to working with the University System staff, campus leadership and our elected officials to achieve the best possible outcomes for our most important resource - our children."
President Diederich also noted that Dr. Skogen has a demonstrated record of success in working in a collaborative environment, building strong relationships with key constituencies and is well positioned to refine and implement the Pathways to Student Success Plan designed to take the North Dakota University System to a higher level of accountability and performance.
The other candidate was Shane Goettle, former Commissioner of the North Dakota Department of Commerce. "It was a very difficult choice, because both candidates have impressive qualifications and impeccable credentials," said Diederich.
Dr. Skogen, a native of Hettinger, North Dakota, has been president of BSC since 2006. Previously he was academic dean and deputy superintendent for academic affairs at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, New Mexico. Dr. Skogen has taught history in collegiate and military settings and served in other capacities in the U.S. Air Force, as director of operations and inspector general of the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming from 1998 to 2001. In 2004, he was an educational consultant to the United Arab Emirates. He hold a B.S. degree in secondary education from Dickinson (N.D.) State University, an M.A. in history from Central Missouri State University, Warrensburg, Missouri, and a Ph.D. in history from Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona.
