Rick Steves, America's most respected authority on European travel, visits Bismarck State College Wednesday, March 12, to talk about topics he explored in his 2009 book, "Travel as a Political Act."
Steves shares his wisdom on how engaging with other cultures has changed his perspective about America's place in the world. Ideas explored in the book come from decades of overseas travel.
His two presentations, titled "Traveling with Rick Steves: Celebrating the Power of Diversity," begin at 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. in the Bavendick Stateroom of BSC's National Energy Center of Excellence.
A book signing with book sale follows the programs, presented at no charge by the BSC Embracing Diversity Committee, the Study Abroad program, and BSC ArtsQuest.
Steves is writer, producer and host of Oregon Public Broadcasting's series, "Rick Steves' Europe." The past 15 years, he has presented more than 100 travel shows for public television. His public radio program, "Travel with Rick Steves," began in 2005.
A prolific author, Steves has written more than 50 European travel books and co-authored "Europe 101: History and Art for Travelers." He taught Americans how to travel solo and on little money with his 1980 travel skills book, "Europe through the Back Door."
In 1999, Steves undertook a new travel genre with his anecdotal "Postcards from Europe," a recounting of his favorite moments from 25 years overseas. He has continued with "Travel as a Political Act," using stories to show how travel collapses the difference between "us" and "them," and how good ideas and solutions to issues in other countries can benefit America.
Steves writes - "Travel has taught me the fun in having my cultural furniture rearranged and my ethnocentric self-assurances walloped. It has humbled me, enriched my life, and tuned me in to a rapidly changing world."
The Steves event is the kickoff for ArtsQuest and BSC's Study Abroad program. Information about semester study in Ireland and Scotland will be available.
