Search committee upholds candidate recommendation
DICKINSON, N.D. - The Dickinson State University Presidential Search Committee has upheld its decision to keep its recommendation for finalists to the State Board of Higher Education one week after one of those finalists withdrew from the race.
During its previous meeting the search committee had recommended that two finalists, Daniel H. Hanson, Ph.D., and Thomas M. Mitzel, Ph.D., both move forward. After that recommendation was made Hanson issued a statement that he was withdrawing from the race, a decision which left Mitzel as the sole candidate for next week's final interview in front of the Board.
The lone agenda item at today's meeting surrounded whether or not the search committee would recommend any further candidates to the Board. Extensive discussion surrounded the recommendation, before a 7-4 vote was made to reaffirm the search committee's prior decision and not recommend any more candidates forward.
Donna Joyce, a member of the search committee, noted during the meeting that what the university needed was unity, not division. She added that keeping the search committee's prior recommendation in place would help bring that unity about for the campus.
