Phyllis Johnson, UND's Vice President for Research and Economic Development, has announced plans to retire at the end of June 2014.
Johnson joined UND in 2009. A native of North Dakota, she holds bachelor's and Ph.D. degrees from UND. She has served for more than 25 years in various administrative and management positions in research and development, and previously held the position of director for the USDA's Beltsville Area (Washington, D.C.) Agricultural Research Service. Johnson was also recognized by President Bill Clinton as being in the top 5 percent of senior executives across the Federal government.
Johnson held previous positions as clinical instructor in internal medicine at the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences; research chemist and research leader, Grand Forks (U.S. Department of Agriculture) Human Nutrition Research Center; and lab instructor at the University of Mary in Bismarck.
Johnson will remain in Grand Forks and will continue to play an active role in the community. She currently serves as Chair of the United Way of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce. She also chairs the Committee for the Women's Fund of the Grand Forks/East Grand Forks Community Foundation.
Said UND President Robert Kelley, "We appreciate Dr. Johnson's contributions to UND, particularly her leadership in forming the country's first UAS Research Compliance Committee. The work of this committee, which proactively addresses UAS privacy issues, has been an important factor in the recently announced designation of North Dakota as a national UAS test site. We wish Dr. Johnson all the best in her future endeavors."
UND Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Tom DiLorenzo added, "I have appreciated the opportunity to work with Dr. Johnson. Her research experience and perspectives have been extremely valuable to me in my transition to UND and have benefitted our entire organization."
Provost DiLorenzo will oversee a national search for a new research officer. A search committee will be formed shortly.
