Chamber Music Fest
The University of North Dakota is harmonizing with Minot State University and Concordia College to provide students with a one-of-a-kind musical lesson and concert experience Saturday, Nov. 2, and Sunday, Nov. 3.

That's when Dr. Nariaki Sugiura and Dr. Simona Barbu, of the UND Music Department, are slated to play host to a "Chamber Music Fest," involving the three schools. The weekend events are free and anyone is welcome to attend.

Saturday, Nov. 2, four professors from Minot State and Concordia College will give master classes to UND student ensemble groups as well as to students from the Crescendo Chamber Music Program, a local youth music program directed by Naomi Welsh, in the Hopper-Danley Spiritual Center on campus. The ensemble master classes, students will perform in different combinations to learn how to play chamber music together. Students will use a range of instruments such as strings, piano, saxophone and voice.

Here's schedule of Saturday's master classes:

9 a.m., Erik Anderson, cello, Minot State
10:30 a.m., Kate Hamilton, viola, Concordia College
Noon, Sonja Harasim, violin, Concordia College
3 p.m., Diana Anderson, piano, Minot State

Then, Sunday, Nov.3, the four visiting professors, along with Sugiura and Barbu, will join students to put on a recital and community concert at 2 p.m., in the Josephine Campbell Recital Hall.

This is the first time a collaboration of this scale has taken place between the institutions.

"Our aim is to bring down the walls among schools," said Sugiura, a UND piano instructor.

The UND Music Department hopes the event will not only bring more awareness for chamber music to students and community, but also will encourage collaboration among universities to make music programs stronger.

Ultimately, the concert will be a learning experience for students of all ages.

"We hope to inspire our students to explore the world of chamber music and give them motivation to practice and perform," said Barbu, a UND cello instructor.
