UND invites public to Aug. 13 reception for new dean of Arts & Sciences and new dean of Education & Human Development

Tuesday, Aug. 13 for the new deans of the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Education & Human Development.

The reception will run from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Empire Arts Center in downtown Grand Forks. The public is invited. Refreshments will be served.

The reception, with the theme: "Live together, work together, play together, Exceptional together," will serve as a community welcome to Dr. Debbie Storrs, Arts & Sciences; and Dr. Robert Hill, Education & Human Development, both of whom recently assumed the top spots in their respective colleges at UND.

Dr. Storrs was named dean of the UND College of Arts & Sciences in June, succeeding interim dean of Arts & Sciences Kathleen Tiemann, now dean of the School of Liberal Arts at Merrimack College in Andover, Mass. Dr. Hill began his duties as dean of the College of Education & Human Development on July 1. He is the successor to Dr. Daniel Rice, who returned to a faculty position in the College in July 2012. Faculty member Dr. Dennis Cain followed Dr. Rice as dean on an interim basis.

Dr. Storrs came to UND from the University of Idaho, where she served for five years as Associate Dean of the College of Letters, Arts and Social Science. She joined the University of Idaho as assistant professor of sociology in 1997, moving through the ranks to full professor in 2010. In addition to her leadership experience as Associate Dean, she served as Interim Chair of the Department of Modern Languages & Cultures, and as co-president of Athena, a faculty-staff association dedicated to gender equity.

Dr. Storrs earned a Ph.D. in sociology and a master's in sociology at the University of Oregon, and a bachelor's degree in sociology at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Her research portfolio includes scholarship in teaching and learning, community action and health inequities, qualitative methods and narratives, racial/gendered identities, and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education. She is a committed teacher and advisor with international teaching experience and has been recognized for her success by peers at her former institution with the Teaching Excellence Award, Advising Excellence Award, Martin Luther King Jr. Faculty Award, and the Virginia Wolf Distinguished Service Award.

Dr. Robert Hill

Prior to coming to UND, Dr. Hill was at the University of Utah, where he started as a an assistant professor in the Department of Educational Psychology in 1988. He would eventually attain the rank of professor and serve as chair of the Department of Educational Psychology.

During the 2011-2012 academic year, Dr. Hill was a Leadership Fellow of the American Council on Education, which enabled him to work closely with the President of Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Dr. Hill's scholarly interests are in higher education programming and in adult lifespan development. He studies continuing education strategies in adult learners and is the author of Positive Aging: A guide for mental health professionals and consumers, published by WW Norton in 2005. He has written numerous articles and books on multiple topics including higher education, web-based strategies for learning in adults, and community-university partnerships. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of The Specialist, a semi-annual publication of the American Board of Professional Psychology, and is a Diplomate in Counseling Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology. He was a Fulbright Scholar in the Netherlands in 2003-04, and at various times has been a visiting scholar in Australia and in New Zealand and a research scientist at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Dr. Hill holds undergraduate and master's degrees in Psychology and School Psychology from Brigham Young University and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Stanford University.
