Farned named UND's first Ombuds

Posted on 8/6/2013

University of North Dakota President Dr. Robert O. Kelley has appointed Dusty Bates Farned as UND's first Ombuds. Previously a mediator in Dallas, Texas, Farned assumed duties at UND on July 1.

"We are delighted to have Dusty join us as UND's first Ombuds, a position that will be a neutral resource for members of the entire University community. Dusty will be available to assist members of the UND community by listening to concerns and then proposing various options for positive resolution, providing information, and making referrals," said UND President Robert Kelley.

Kelley thanked members of the Ombuds Search Committee, who have agreed to remain in place during the first year in an advisory capacity.

"I am very humbled and excited," said Farned. "By going forward with this program, UND has made an affirmative statement about its commitment to a positive learning and working environment."

Dusty Bates Farned received his Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences from Harvard University, returned home to Alabama for his Juris Doctorate and Certification in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Faulkner University, and earned his Master's in Dispute Resolution from Pepperdine University (ranked #1 in dispute resolution by U.S. News & World Report for the past nine years). Farned has also published multiple academic articles on conflict and dispute resolution.

Prior to completing his undergraduate studies at Harvard, Farned interned with the Los Angeles Mayor's Office, where he served as staff and community liaison to a newly created Department of Neighborhood Empowerment. Prior to attending law school, he worked briefly in a social science research role for the University of Tennessee. From 2011-2013, Farned worked as a contract mediator with Dispute Mediation Service of Dallas, where he served as the youngest member of their distinguished Litigation Panel and helped successfully start their new Community Mediation branch.
