Lake Region State College's Wind Energy Technician Program has received the 2012 prestigious Seal of Approval from the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA). Through a follow-up process, AWEA has confirmed LRSC's Seal of Approval status for the second of two years.
With over 2,500 members and advocates, AWEA is a national trade association representing wind power project developers, equipment suppliers, services providers, parts manufacturers, utilities, researchers, and others involved in the wind industry.
Last year, the college program's curriculum was carefully reviewed by a group of industry professionals who found the quality of the course materials to overwhelmingly satisfy AWEA's wind turbine technician core skill-set criteria. The Seal of Approval covers four core skill sets.
"Earning the Seal of Approval for a second year is an important step for our program," said LRSC President Dr. Doug Darling.
"The Seal validates that we are continually updating our curriculum and teaching the specific theory and skills needed by wind technicians in this fast growing industry."
The Wind Energy Technician Program at Lake Region State College launched in 2009. The program accepts 20 applicants each year. Students complete rigorous coursework in AC/DC electricity, programmable logic controllers, climb safety and rescue, computer networking, hydraulics and pneumatics, motor and generator control, troubleshooting, and electrical systems.
The program's instructors are bringing real-world experience and deep technical knowledge to the classroom and lab.
"We greatly value the Seal of Approval program and want to ensure we are meeting the ongoing requirements," said Jay Johnson, LRSC Wind Energy Technician Program Coordinator and Instructor. "Credentials recognized by AWEA exemplify the commitment our college has to training a top-notch work force."
The program is guided by an advisory board of industry leaders. Companies represented on the board include Allete (Minnesota Power), Denali Energy, Iberdrola Renewables, NextEra Energy, Ottertail Power Company, Montana Dakota Utilities, Siemens Energy, Nordic Fiberglass.
