Posted on 8/6/2018

Nearly 1,500 children in kindergarten through fifth grade will visit NDSUforthe inaugural "Walk Into My Future" event on Wednesday, Aug. 8. The event is part of a collaborative community program called "Seeds for Hope" and builds career and college awareness by introducing children to the university setting through campus tours and college-related activities.

The children attending "Walk Into My future" are served by the Boys and Girls Club of the Red River Valley /Youth Commission and the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties.

The event is sponsored through Fargo Public Schools Development Foundation and Tri-College University and will serve as a springboard to the next step of the "Seeds for Hope" program, which will engage community members to invest in our future workforce by collaborating with the Bank of North Dakota 529 College SAVE program. Two sessions are scheduled. The morning session is from 9 a.m. to noon. The afternoon session runs from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

"Many students attending this event are from underrepresented, low-income or otherwise challenging backgrounds," said Robin Nelson, chief executive office for the Boys and Girls Club of the Red River Valley. "The purpose of ‘Walk Into My Future' is to help students build their dreams for the future and envision themselves as college students."

"This program is meant to instill hope and inspire these children to consider college," said Lorrie Thoemke, vice president of learning centers for the YMCA of Cass and Clay Counties. "Our goal is to help students and their families realize that attending a post-secondary educational institution is every child's opportunity."

As a student-focused, land grant, research institution, we serve our citizens.
