NDSU introduces Guide app for students

NDSU is unveiling a new app, called Guide, that is designed to help improve students' experience and learning at NDSU.

Guide is a mobile app to help students manage their education and connect effectively with a wide range of activities and resources at NDSU. Guide provides convenient access to class schedules, faculty and adviser contact information and appointment scheduling. The app also offers individualized to-do lists, tips for success and reminders when a registration hold needs resolution.

"The app provides students with an easy way to help organize and manage all of the tasks involved with navigating NDSU," explained Casey Peterson, director of Student Success Programs. "In short, it provides an electronic clearinghouse and connection point for students."

To download the app, students should search for "Guide College Simplified" in Google Play or the App Store and log in with their existing NDSU electronic ID and password.

"Guide automatically loads their class schedule, including contact information for instructors and GPS mapping to the class if they're not sure where they're going," said Peterson, noting about 84 percent of new students who attended orientation have already downloaded the app. "There's a resource section that provides links to support like tutoring, places to eat, and campus services. One other feature is that Guide will provide push notifications to remind students of holds that will affect their ability to register."

Student body vice president Marisa Pacella said, "Guide presents the opportunity for vital information to be readily accessible for students on an easy-to-use app. This is a powerful tool for students, especially freshmen, to stay organized and allow them to concentrate on what matters most - academics."

Guide is a product of the Education Advisory Board, known as EAB, and is designed to connect directly to the Student Success Collaborative (SSC) platform NDSU already uses. Guide is supported by an anonymous donor for the first years of the initiative.

Guide was introduced to incoming students during orientation sessions this summer. Returning students will be able to use the app starting in August.

"Students involved in the development of the app are excited about having a tool that will simplify their daily experience," Peterson said. "They see the value of the product for students, and have repeatedly expressed how much they wish they would have had the tool as a first-year student."
