NDSU students, faculty travel abroad in European exchange program

Posted on 4/24/2018

NDSU students, faculty and staff have the chance to travel abroad through the European ERASMUS+ Programme. The program was established in 1987 and is the European Union's equivalent to the U.S. Fulbright Program.

The program supports educational and training exchanges for students, faculty and staff. Participants travel to the partner university, Universitatea Babeș-Bolyaiin Romania, with funding provided through the program. Students spend a semester at the partner university, while faculty and staff conduct one-week visits for teaching or training purposes.

"The experiences and opportunities afforded to NDSU students, faculty and staff via ERASMUS+ are unique, transformative and rewarding," said Florin Salajan, associate professor in the School of Education and faculty program participant. "It fosters academic, intercultural, professional and personal experiences which would be difficult, if not impossible, to replicate in the absence of the program."

NDSU joined the program in 2015. Salajan and Jeffrey Bumgarner, professor of criminal justice and political science, have participated in the faculty exchange. NDSU student Zac Prekel studied political science in Romania in spring 2017. Romanian student Daria Zama studied communication at NDSU in fall 2017.

"As an international student, living with 250 students from other countries, all trying to thrive in a new place, brings your education outside of the classroom and applies it to your everyday encounters with people from all over the globe," said Prekel. "I would highly recommend it to anyone. It is quite a personal growth journey and that was my favorite part."

Undergraduate students from the following disciplines are eligible to apply:

Business administration

Communication

Education

Journalism

Political science
